Performances

The conservatory believes that the best way to motivate students to practice and to help them excel in their skill of making music and performing in the arts, is to hold recitals and perform at community and outreach events. We want to give our students something to look forward to and to prepare for throughout the school year.

The following is freely adapted and paraphrased from
"Fundamentals of Piano Practice, 2nd Edition" by Chuan C. Chang

When students must perform, all the teacher's instructions, the necessary practice, etc., take on an entirely new meaning and urgency. They learn what it means to complete a real task, and they learn what 'making music' and 'performing' means. Most youngsters in protected environments don't learn these skills until they go to college.  Our students  learn these skills at their first recital, regardless of their age. Students are never as self-motivated as when preparing for a recital. They become focused and results oriented. They listen intently to the teacher and really try to understand the meaning of the teacher's instructions. The students become very serious about eliminating all errors and learning everything correctly. Without recitals: students often end up practicing just a few times right before the day of their lesson.  With recitals: students usually will spend more time practicing, in order to perfect the music they will be performing.  The difference in their progress can be like night and day

We hold two recitals each school year. Our first recital of the school year is in December and the Grand Finale Recital is in May.

About

MAC-NCCN is dedicated to enriching the lives of children and teens in the Oakland and San Francisco Bay Area through the arts.  Studies have proven that children who participate in structured music classes have higher math skills in school.   Learning an instrument is a great way for children to learn discipline.   Being a part of a group teaches children to think of the whole as greater than the individual, in other words, to be a team player.   Music is an excellent alternative for children and helps to give them a sense of pride in their accomplishments and confidence in their abilities. When children feel good about their talents, they are much less likely to use their time in negative activities.

Our program is a 9 month comprehensive course of classes that consists of 3 trimesters that usually run from October through May. Group classes are 40 minute sessions and private lessons are 30 minutes.

MAC-NCCN exists through volunteer efforts including fundraisers and donations from parents and donor partners of the program . We are an extension ministry of the Northern California Compassion Network of Oakland California.  www.nccn-ca.org/.

Our Mission

MAC is dedicated to enriching the lives of children and teens in the Oakland and San Francisco Bay Area through the arts.  The Music and Arts Conservatory gives students the opportunity to share the skills they learn in a safe and positive environment, helps students to appreciate the presentations of other performers, encourages family involvement at every level, and raises the community's awareness and appreciation of the fine arts.

Outreach

It is our goal and vision to reach out to children who would not normally attend a music school or be involved in an activity involving the arts and give them an opportunity to participate in our conservatory program.  This opens up the opportunity for children to use their God given skills, to achieve higher education goals after completing high school.

The conservatory is endeavoring to accomplish this goal by offering classes to students through their after school and summer programs.  This is a plus for the children, neighborhood, schools, community and everyone in general.
